The illuminated building behind the crowd is the Pazo de Raxoi, an 18th‑century neoclassical palace that today houses the city council and part of the Galician regional government, closing the western side of the square with its long, symmetrical façade.​ At Christmas, the square turns from a place of arrival and quiet reflection into a kind of open‑air living room for the whole city: lights are switched on in late November, a tall tree and smaller firs are set up, and families, students and pilgrims mingle under the decorations as choirs, street performers and children’s activities fill the early winter evenings. Locals like to say that if you stand in Praza do Obradoiro long enough in December, you will see the world walk past you – from weary walkers finishing their Camino to neighbours just coming out to admire the lights and feel, for a moment, that the old stones and the new festivities are sharing the same heartbeat.
