"The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness." John Muir #clickoftheday #clickdeepreals #nature #switzerland #wednesday The more you know 💡 This Click looks down the Lauterbrunnen Valley from near Mürren, the car‑free mountain village that sits on a natural balcony high above the valley floor at around 1,650 metres in the Bernese Oberland. The steep ride up here by the Bergbahn Lauterbrunnen‑Mürren and connecting cableways from Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg is famous for giving exactly this kind of view: chalets and farms strung along the river below, vertical rock walls to the right and, above everything, the white faces of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau that watch over the whole region. Mürren’s history goes back to at least the 13th century, when it was an isolated farming settlement; until the late 1800s, villagers would walk mule paths down to the valley for supplies before the first funicular and narrow‑gauge railway made it easier to reach. Today it is best known as the gateway to the Schilthorn, whose summit station and revolving restaurant Piz Gloria starred in the 1969 James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” and still host Bond‑themed exhibitions and events that draw fans up every year. Down in the valley, Lauterbrunnen has its own lore as the “Valley of 72 Waterfalls”, with Staubbach Falls dropping almost 300 metres over a cliff edge in a cascade that inspired Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s poem “Gesang der Geister über den Wassern” (“Song of the Spirits over the Waters”). Between spring and autumn, the pastures you see in this Click host a changing pattern of cows, hikers and paragliders, while on winter weekends torchlight descents, village festivals and ski races link Mürren and the valley into a yearly rhythm that keeps this view feeling both timeless and very much alive.
